In Rhode Island, my state and local AFT has been the force behind a rigorous new teacher evaluation system. As in the past, my union has worked collaboratively with my district in order to provide innovative practices that promote higher student achievement. We have worked together to reform curriculum, provide professional development, adjust schedules to allow for more instructional time and collaboration time with colleagues, and to resolve issues that arise. My union is a professional organization that supports both the teachers and the students. I know that I am a better teacher because of the efforts of my union!
