In the event your memory of American history is feeling a little rusty, this week The Learning Curve will be presenting a few short history lessons, courtesy of NBC Learn, the education arm of NBC News.

The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 2, 1776, not on July 4 as generally believed.

"You see they didnt know. It was all still a big secret. Independence had been declared on July 2nd, the Declaration adopted on July 4th," explained historian Richard Shenkman. "But nobody knew anything of these events, not until July 8th. Thats when all the celebrating began."
