While schools and school districts are full of many talented people, the systems under which they work are too often burdened by numerous archaic and inefficient policies and practices that don't meaningfully empower teachers, principals and students to succeed. Limited resources often do not reach the classroom where dollars matter the most, and many talented Americans are dissuaded from entering the profession. Teachers cannot solve this problem alone. School and district leadership is critical to create the modern working conditions and innovative support structures under which students and teachers can and do make dramatic gains. Leadership is also critical to ensuring that low-income parents - like their wealthier peers - receive an equal opportunity to send their child to a high-performing public school, rather than be forced into a failing neighborhood school.
